Former LSU Tigers teammates Flau’jae Johnson played against Aneesah Marrow in Sunday’s regular-season duel between the Seattle Storm and the Connecticut Sun. Johnson was drafted eighth overall and Morrow went seventh overall as both of Kim Mulkey’s girls enjoyed playing against each other for the first time in a while.
Morrow came off the bench to score 17 points on 7-15 shooting, including 3-6 from beyond the arc. She also had 16 rebounds in 31 minutes. On the other hand, Johnson started as the shooting guard for the Storm, contributing 16 points on 3-10 shooting, including 1-3 from the 3-point line. She played for 30 minutes.
After the game, Johnson said she enjoyed Morrow pushing her to do better.
“But I’m just excited to see her flourish because she was really underrated, especially in college,” Johnson said about Morrow. “They didn’t think an undersized VA could play, but she could play. She could shoot that thing. I’m so proud of her. All the work she put in, she humble. And it just showed.”
Johnson also took pride in learning under Mulkey at Baton Rouge and showing her skills at a professional level. She explained the role of Mulkey behind players like her and Morrow.
“Coach Mulkey made pros. Like, you know what I’m saying? We all doing our thing in the W,” she added. “Shout-out BG was on the court, too. So it was definitely a Mulkey-love-love reunion. But it was beautiful just seeing her out there flourish. I just, I love it.”
Flau’jae Johnson Shares Expectations From Rookie Season
Flau’jae Johnson impressively made her Seattle Storm debut, finishing with 12 points, two rebounds, and two assists in a 91-80 loss against the Golden State Valkyries.
After the game, Johnson shared her thoughts on what a great rookie would be like for her during her exclusive interview with WJCL.
“Leaving a different player than when I came in,” Johnson said. “I don’t want to be the same rookie. I want there to be a drastic difference between the player I am in May and the player I am whenever the season ends.”
It remains to be seen what the future holds for the former LSU star, who is trying to make her name in the league.
