“Not Good”: Kim Mulkey Ripped Into LSU’s Slow Start vs. Tennessee With Honest Admission on Struggles

LSU Tigers coach Kim Mulkey made an aggressive statement during her halftime interview during her team’s most recent regular-season game, as she called on her players to be more physical. On Thursday, Feb. 26, Mulkey and the Tigers faced coach Kim Caldwell’s Tennessee Lady Volunteers on the former’s home court, the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Before the two teams went into their respective dugouts at halftime, Mulkey was interviewed and asked for her thoughts on the rebounding differential that LSU was facing. The Tigers were up by a mere point against Tennessee at halftime, 43-42, which forced Mulkey to say:

“ Just what you said. You’ve got to rebound the ball. This is not good basketball. Anybody that’s a basketball junkie is looking at this like a rec ball. That’s what it looks like out here. ‘You, you take it. That’s a hot potato. No, you take it.’ Defense help side, non-existent. It’s one-on-one basketball by both teams right now, but Tennessee makes you play that way. It’s just kind of kamikaze.”

“Take care of the ball, take care of the ball, keep ’em out of the paint, rebound the ball, and you might win tonight,” she added.

Mulkey is in her fifth year of coaching the Louisiana-based program after her prior stint as the head coach of the Baylor Bears for 21 years. The tenured tactician led the Tigers to their lone national championship in 2023, and it is presumably what they’re aiming to return to in the 2026 NCAA tournament, which will commence in the coming weeks.

The LSU Tigers Extended Their Lead In The Second Half To Win Over The Tennessee Lady Volunteers

Fortunately for Kim Mulkey and the LSU Tigers faithful, the Tigers pulled through and played to the LSU standard come the second half.

With this shift in momentum, Mulkey and company defeated the Tennessee Lady Volunteers by 16 points, 89-73, as they improved to an overall record of 25-4 (11-4 SEC).

LSU now sets its sights on the final game of its regular season, schedule against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
