The LSU Lady Tigers of Kim Mulkey had a massive win on Sunday, beating Missouri a whopping 108-55. The victory is one of the highlights of the team’s season so far, and they’re likely to go up in their current No. 7 spot in the Top 25.
During the game, as always, Mulkey could be seen wearing a very noticeable outfit. This time around, she wore a blue jacket with LSU purple pants. After the game, the coach explained the almost serendipitous arrangement that led to the impressive win:
“With a lot of guards? That’s crazy,” Coach Kim Mulkey said. “We had not really practiced or prepared to play that lineup. What changed was the (availability) reports that were given out and No. 10 for Missouri was out. So, Bob (Starkey) and I are, like, we got a problem here. I said, go ahead with the lineup we had planned to start, and then we’ll just adjust and move Mikaylah (Williams) inside and with ZaKiyah (Johnson), and just play small. And it worked, and it was entertaining. Everybody wanted to get a piece of that rebound and take off, and I think consequently, we scored a lot of points. And that was a fun game to watch, but it wasn’t something we prepared for because we didn’t know until before game time that that young lady was not playing.”
The star of the night was without a doubt MiLaysia Fulwiley, who scored a record-breaking 22 points, while recording 11 rebounds and four assists. ZaKiyah Johnson and Flau’jae Johnson scored 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Why Did Kim Mulkey Bench Grace Knox for the Missouri Game?
In the postgame press conference, Mulkey was asked why freshman Grace Knox wasn’t on the show during the amazing victory over Missouri. According to her, it isn’t anything the player did; it just wasn’t the right situation to bring her in:
“I went with Mikaylah (Williams) in there,” Mulkey said, “and I wasn’t really gonna probably even play (Koval) and (Joyner) anymore, but they talked me into playing some zone and put them in there so they wouldn’t get exposed having to guard on the perimeter.
“So there was just no need to throw (Knox) out there.”
The LSU Tigers have two games left in their regular season, against No. 21 Tennessee on Thursday and Mississippi State on Sunday.
