LSU Tigers coach Kim Mulkey has gone viral for how she greeted the opposition’s coaching staff during her team’s recent regular-season game, as it’s being compared to one of the most popular memes on the internet. On Thursday, Feb. 26, Mulkey and the Tigers beat Kim Caldwell’s Tennessee Lady Volunteers 89-73 on the former’s home court, the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
In a video posted by user @whereisdw on X/Twitter, Mulkey can be seen greeting the Lady Volunteers staff after the game. She normally shook hands with the white individuals of the Tennessee team, but when it came to assistant coach Roman Tubner, Mulkey opted for an animated handshake, as she lifted her hand high.
College basketball fans online started pointing out that Mulkey’s post-game handshakes with the Tennessee coaching staff were reminiscent of comedy duo Key & Peele’s viral Barack Obama skit.
“😂😂😂,” one fan captioned with a GIF of a clip from the aforementioned skit.
“The Obama but in reverse is WILD 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂,” another fan exclaimed with a plethora of laughing emojis.
“Key and Peele in reverse,” another user said.
Another user shared a GIF of the said Key & Peele video.
Other X users attempted to figure out why Mulkey shook hands in the said manner with Tubner.
“Kim is a white woman from Hammond, Louisiana. If you know anything about white folks from Hammond, you’d know this was on brand,” one user claimed.
“She coaches in Baton Rouge, what’s y’all expect lol,” another user wrote.
“She a real one!!!,” a user posted.
Fortunately for Mulkey and the Tigers faithful, they defeated the Lady Volunteers 89-73 in front of their home crowd. The Louisiana-based program now holds an overall record of 25-4 (11-4 SEC), as they are the fourth seed in the 2026 SEC standings, with one game left in their 2025-26 regular season schedule.
What Was Key & Peele’s Barack Obama Skit That Was Being Compared To Kim Mulkey’s?
In the skit by Key & Peele wherein they impersonate former President of the United States Barack Obama, Jordan Peele acts as Obama and meets people at a press conference.
In the clip, Peele normally shakes hands with the white individuals he encounters, but has a much larger greeting for black individuals. This is inspired by Obama’s known tendency to do the same, as it’s been publicly seen with his interactions with Team USA men’s basketball and beyond.
