As the UConn Huskies prepare to defend their NCAA National Championship, several players will not be able to play due to injury, including forward Ice Brady. The Huskies star has been watching from the sidelines and supporting her team during games and practices, especially in the Big East Tournament as UConn takes on the No. 8 Georgetown Hoyas in the quarterfinal. She was seen in crutches watching the practices with Morgan Cheli.
On February 17, the program revealed that Ice Brady underwent knee surgery and will be out for the rest of the season after being a role player, averaging 2.5 points and 3 rebounds. Head coach Geno Auriemma revealed that she had been having inflammation on her right knee, leading to her having that surgery. She has not played for the team since Nov. 12.
Before getting sidelined, Brady played 71 games for the Huskies and started 15 times. Because of this latest injury, she should be eligible for a medical redshirt year, which would be her second one, as she had been redshirted during her freshman year, also because of her right knee.
As for Morgan Cheli, who was seen sitting besides Brady, she is also out for the season due to a foot and ankle injury. Unlike Ice Brady, she has not yet played a single game this season due to her injuries.
Geno Auriemma on Whether Ice Brady or Morgan Cheli Would Ever Return This Season
UConn had been dealing with a lot of injuries throughout this season, as several big stars, such as Jana El Alfy, were also injured earlier. Despite this, the Huskies have remained undefeated and are coming into March Madness as the clear favorites to retain their national title.
As the injuries piled up, head coach Geno Auriemma addressed the situation regarding Ice Brady and Morgan Cheli, and he was as blunt as ever, admitting that he was not very confident about their return.
“If they are (back), I’ll be pleasantly surprised,” the coach admitted.
The Huskies are now 31-0 as they take on Georgetown in the Big East Tournament.
