UConn Huskies guard Azzi Fudd didn’t receive the invitation for dinner between Geno Auriemma and WNBA legend Diana Taurasi. The Phoenix Mercury legend seems to have hosted her former head coach, who is in the city for the Final Four contest against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
During a recent press conference, Fudd was asked if she was part of that dinner.
“Yeah, I’m not at the level yet to reach that invite, to receive that invite, hopefully one day,” she said.
Fudd also shared what it’s like to play in Taurasi’s practice court and being able to reach out to her for any problem since she’s a UConn alum.
“Being able to practice at a facility, staying on her road, being in her city, it’s incredible,” Fudd added. “Like I was saying earlier, having someone that you went from looking up to, to then meeting, then playing at UConn, and knowing that you’re a part of this sisterhood, and that she’s a resource, and she’s someone that we can reach out to and talk to, and just look up to and go to for advice if we ever need anything, I think is incredible. But being able to be here, play in her city, hopefully get to see her while we’re here, it’s incredible.”
Taurasi is not only a legend in the WNBA, but her college career is also bona fide. Before being picked first overall in the 2024 WNBA draft, Taurasi played for the Huskies from 2000 to 2004, during which she secured three national titles, two Naismith College Player of the Year and two NCAA Tournament MOP.
Geno Auriemma Pins Legacy on Azzi Fudd But on One Condition
Geno Auriemma has a special message for Azzi Fudd ahead of the Final Four game against South Carolina. The 2025 NCAA Tournament MOP has to win the national championship this year if she wants to be remembered as an all-time great in college basketball history, according to the Huskies head coach.
“The hardest part is being a senior at Connecticut and knowing what that means and what the expectation for you is and carrying that around with you,” Auriemma told reporters. “So many of our players have ended their careers cutting down nets at the national championship game, and you desperately want to be one of those people.
“If we win tomorrow and we win Sunday, Azzi will be crowned one of the greatest of all-time. If we don’t win tomorrow, and we don’t even get a chance to play on Sunday, she’s going to feel like this was a disappointing year for her.”
The task is not at all easy for Fudd, as they face Dawn Staley’s squad, who is seeking to take revenge for the loss in last year’s national title game. Fudd’s legacy is at stake if she’s unable to take UConn into the national championship game.
