Sandy Brondello Takes Full Responsibility in Apology to Angel Reese After Viral ‘Protected Species’ Comment

Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello publicly apologized to Atlanta Dream star Angel Reese on Saturday for a comment made during Friday’s game.

The controversy took place in the fourth quarter of the contest after Reese collided with Toronto’s Nyara Sabally. She suffered a rib injury and had to be helped off the floor. Sabally was given a defensive foul by the officials.

During the exchange, television cameras and microphones picked up Brondello referring to Reese as a “protected species.” The clip quickly spread across social media, prompting strong reactions from fans and analysts.

Reese later reposted a fan’s criticism of the remark on X and responded with a brief message:

    “ARE WE SURPRISED?!”

On Saturday, Brondello addressed the situation. She took full responsibility for her words and apologized to the Atlanta star.

“Angel, I’m sorry. Last night, in the emotion of the moment after Nyara’s injury, I used a phrase that I shouldn’t have used, and I take full responsibility for that. My frustration was with the officiating, but my words unfairly put the focus on you.”

“I also understand that my words carried an impact beyond what I intended, particularly for Black women in our league, and I’m deeply sorry for that. I’ve spent my career competing with, coaching and learning from incredible Black women.”

“I regret that my words caused hurt to a community I respect so deeply. I have a lot of respect for you as both a player and a person, and I sincerely apologize to you, your teammates, and the Dream organization for my comment.”

As of writing this, Reese has not publicly responded to Brondello’s apology.

Atlanta Dream’s Dominant Win Over Toronto Tempo

The controversy overshadowed Reese’s impressive performance against the Tempo. She finished the game with 23 points and 12 rebounds, recording her 17th double-double of the season.

Her teammate, Naz Hillmon, scored a career-high of 24 points, and veteran guard Jordin Canada got 18 points and 13 assists, helping the Dream secure a dominant 111-92 victory.

Although the postgame conversation shifted to Brondello’s remarks, the Toronto coach publicly apologized, taking responsibility for her comments. Whether Reese accepts the apology remains to be seen.
