Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue has commented on the clash between two premier women’s college basketball coaches, Dawn Staley and Geno Auriemma.
On Friday, Coach Auriemma’s UConn Huskies lost 48-62 to Coach Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks in the NCAA Final Four of the March Madness in neutral territory, the Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
After the game, the two tenured tacticians verbally clashed, which was instigated by Geno when he went in for a post-game handshake. The sequence reached NBA ears, as Lue was asked about it during a recent media availability.
“With what happened yesterday, I don’t think we can really, you know, talk about that because like, we don’t wanna take away from what Dawn’s really done; to beat Geno, who’s the winningest coach in college women’s basketball history. To take away what she was able to do yesterday, how her team played, that wouldn’t be fair. So I can’t comment on that. I’d just comment on both of them being great coaches,” Lue said (0:35).
Staley and her South Carolina-based program beat Auriemma and the Huskies by 14 points, 62-48, to advance to their third national title game in the last five years. Staley and the Gamecocks will take on coach Cori Close’s UCLA Bruins for the title on Sunday at the same venue.
Tyronn Lue Says Dawn Staley Has Been An Inspiration For The Black Community
In the same interview, during a Los Angeles Clippers practice session, coach Tyronn Lue expounded on his point by mentioning how much of an inspiration Dawn Staley has been, even outside of basketball.
“Dawn, just to see what she’s been able to do with the program and, you know, to be winning the way she’s been winning, it is great. It’s great for women’s basketball. It’s great for our black community to see, you know, a strong black woman to do things she’s being able to do,” Lue shared (0:22).
