As the 2026 WNBA free agency kicks in and teams begin making permutations and combinations for the new season, a larger question related to Caitlin Clark looms over. The Indiana Fever superstar will be back in action after returning from a long break due to a knee injury. WNBA analyst Robin Lundberg discussed some important questions for the team.
In his recent talk on YouTube about the upcoming targets of the Fever, Lundberg shared his thoughts on the team’s need for a backup point guard. While the 2024 Rookie of the Year handles major scoring and facilitating duties, the analyst argued that she would have to start playing off the ball as well. Lundberg said:
“For the Fever, I think you look at the backup point guard, that should be a priority for the Fever. And Caitlin Clark is hopefully completely healthy, obviously, but even if she is completely healthy, you wanna reduce her load over the course of an entire season, so you need a competent backup. Also, someone who can play alongside her so she can play off the ball a little bit, I know that’s blasphemous, but I think it’s for the best for Clark’s development to get better off the ball.”
Clark is one of the most efficient facilitators in the league. She led the league in assists per game in her rookie season and increased the overall production. However, Lundberg believed that the team would have to decide whether to bring back their existing backup guards, like Aari McDonald or Odyssey Sims.
The analyst also named Erica Wheeler, who was traded to the Seattle Storm in February 2025, to have a reunion with the Fever. He added:
“Maybe they see a diamond in the rough out there. A lot of you’ll aren’t too fancy on the idea of drafting Raven Johnson.”
While the Fever have limited options after keeping Clark, Aliyah Boston, and
Can the Fever pair Raven Johnson with Caitlin Clark next season?
Besides bringing back the existing backup guards, the Indiana Fever can also target someone like Raven Johnson in the upcoming WNBA draft. She averaged 9.9 points and 5.1 assists in 28.6 minutes. If she remains in the market till the 10th pick, the Fever might get an opportunity to pick a talented backup from the list.
The Fever lost in the semifinals last season, even when they played without Clark. Boston had an All-Star season and led the team in its playoff run. Resolving their point guard issues will only strengthen the Indiana Fever’s offense for the upcoming season and assure a title-contending run.
