Wings GM Curt Miller Heaps Massive Praise for Azzi Fudd As Dallas Rookie Continues to Display Elite Defensive Skills

With all the hype she garnered entering the WNBA, Dallas Wings guard Azzi Fudd has lived up to the hype in both offense and defense. The 2025 NCAA champion is one of the frontrunners for this year’s Rookie of the Year award, only behind Minnesota Lynx star Olivia Miles. On one hand, Fudd is one of the best three-point shooters this year, averaging 37.3%, while she has also held her own on defense with 1.7 steals per game.

The women’s basketball world has taken notice of what Fudd has been able to do this year, which now includes her team’s general manager, two-time WNBA Coach of the Year Curt Miller. In a post on his X/Twitter page on Monday, July 13, Miller praised Fudd for her elite defensive skills. The 57-year-old even brought up some of the best defenders he has ever coached, who Fudd is trending towards living up to.

“Was fortunate to coach the most all defensive players over a 9-year run, including some of the best guard defenders in league history (J Thomas, B January, J Canada). But what
@azzi_35 is doing defensively as a rookie is ELITE! 👊,” Miller claimed.

Miller reposted a video on his X/Twitter post, which shows one of Fudd’s highlights from the Wings’ recent home game against the Chicago Sky. In the sequence, Fudd knocked down a three-pointer that knotted the game at 86-all with less than four minutes remaining in the final period. In the succeeding play, Fudd caused a jump ball after she defended a shot attempt from Sky guard Sydney Taylor.

Dallas Wings coach Jose Fernandez also praised Azzi Fudd for her defense versus the Chicago Sky

Along with Dallas Wings general manager Curt Miller, head coach Jose Fernandez also praised Azzi Fudd for her defense against the Chicago Sky. Fernandez did so during the post-game press conference, in which he affirmed that Fudd’s defensive assignments have been important to their success. Fernandez is in his first year coaching Dallas after former coach Chris Koclanes was fired in the offseason.

“She got a little bit overly aggressive on Taylor a little bit. You know, Taylor drove it, but she came up with a really big play in that fourth. And those are the kind of plays that you look at +/- and all the other stuff, the analytics, but her defensive assignments are crucial for where we’re at right now on who she guards and who she gets stuck on, ” Fernandez said. With the win over Chicago, the Wings now hold a current record of 16-8 as they take on the New York Liberty next on Thursday, July 16. Fudd had two steals and a block, to go with 16 points, three rebounds, and an assist in 35 minutes logged.
