The New York Liberty’s matchup with the Toronto Tempo on Sunday was not without controversial moments, especially when a shoe was thrown at the back of Marina Mabrey. During an argument with one of the officials, Betnijah Laney-Hamilton got hold of Jonquel Jones’ lost shoe and hurled it at Mabrey’s back. The Tempo guard used it hilariously in Laney-Hamilton’s teammate Sabrina Ionescu’s latest launch video on social media.
The issue originated when Mabrey and Laney-Hamilton engaged in a physical tussle for the ball, and the Liberty player caught the Tempo guard in the face, which led to a flagrant foul on Laney-Hamilton. The two players have had bad blood since then, often tangling with each other. However, when Laney-Hamilton hurled a shoe at Mabrey, she was visibly irked.
Laney-Hamilton was ejected from the game. Meanwhile, Ionescu’s new PE with Nike in the ‘Limelight Glow’ colorway is set to launch on July 17, and the brand shared a new advertisement for the shoe.
Mabrey was in the comments section, with a slick reference to the last game’s events. She wrote:
“Throw me one 😂”
Mabrey led the team to a much-needed 93-91 win after back-to-back 30-point games, scoring 30 points and five assists. The team ended a four-game losing streak with a close win after Breanna Stewart missed the game-winner.

After the game, Marina Mabrey was asked the obvious question about the incident and what she thought of it. The guard was seemingly looking for words to describe her feelings and came up with a simple answer:
“I am working on not being rage-baited.”
Mabrey’s response cracked up the room, including head coach Sandy Brondello, who hailed her for controlling her nerves. The guard is averaging a career-best 21.6 ppg this season and enjoying playing as the No. 1 scoring option.
However, that can also become Tempo’s biggest issue when Mabrey has a bad day, or she is not on the roster. Moreover, their performance against the stronger teams has been dismal thus far, except for the win over New York.
