WATCH: Mystics HC Sydney Johnson Escorted Out by Police for Going Ballistic on Refs After Foul on Angel Reese

Sydney Johnson has quickly become the talk of the town in the WNBA. The Washington Mystics faced the Atlanta Dream in WNBA’s commissioner cup. and suffered a blowout loss. Angel Reese led Atlanta to a 109-77 win. She put on a show with another double-double.

Reese scored 18 points and 17 rebounds with 4 steals. She now has 51 career double-doubles in the WNBA. Earlier in May, she became the fastest player to record 50 double-doubles (65 games). While Reese was running away with the game, an incident set off Mystics HC Sydney Johnson.

Angel Reese was driving to the basket with the ball when she was blocked by Mystics’ Alicia Florez. As both fell down on the court, Florez’s action was deemed illegal and Reese got the foul. A time out was taken and coach Johnson was furious with the call. He started to confront the referees. Even when referees gave him the explanation for their decision, his anger only kept increasing.

Sydney Johnson lost his cool to the extent that his coaching staff needed to intervene and stop him from confronting the referees. He then received two straight technical fouls that resulted into an ejection. The only problem, he didn’t get off the court.

The matter escalated when Johnson started to get aggressive. The bench looked worried and tried to hold back Johnson. Kiki Iriafen tried to calm her coach down but even that didn’t work. The police had to intervene and take action. Officers escorted Johnson out of the court in a heated environment.

Fans react to escalating situation involving Sydney Johnson

Fans detailed the whole encounter and shared their take aways.

“Hats off to those assistant coaches for doing their best to hold him back. To Johnson’s credit, he was trying to hype his team cause they played like crap,” one fan appreciated.

“My main take away was the older female cop that smacked the male cop arm down. Like you ain’t got to grab him like that he not under arrest,” one fan noticed.

“They need to call the games fairy it’s getting ridiculous!,” one fan exclaimed.

“Shameful conduct for a coach. Where did he come from anyway?” another questioned.

“Look at him pushing his assistants. Terrible look. He’ll regret that tomorrow,” another fan claimed.

“He’s going to get suspended probably,” another fan predicted.

Apart from Angel Reese, Rhyne Howard continued her supreme form. She scored 19 points with 3 assists and 6 steals. Veteran Allisha Gray also contributed with 15 points while Jordin Canada and Madina Okot had 11 each.

For Mystics on the other hand, it was a disappointing display. With a roster stacked with talent, their season isn’t going as per plan. And this game was just another example of that. Only positives to take away from the game were Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron. Kiki scored 24 points with 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Sonia had 18 points, 2 rebounds and 6 assists.
