The Alyssa Thomas-Caitlin Clark situation has escalated to the point that the WNBA Commissioner has had to intervene. In light of Thomas’ claims that she has received death threats, Cathy Engelbert said on Tuesday that the league “condemns any and all forms of hate,” adding that Thomas’ ordeal “is completely unacceptable.”
In the eyes of OutKick reporter Bobby Burack, though, something was off with Engelbert’s message.
“So, let me get this straight: Alyssa Thomas drives her fist into Clark’s neck. She gets a light suspension. People online say mean things to her, as they unfortunately do to everyone in the news. And now she is the victim? If W players can’t handle the spotlight, stop assaulting CC and putting yourself in the spotlight.”
After the physical sequence between Thomas and Clark in last week’s Fever vs. Mercury game, the league office decided to impose a one-game suspension on the Mercury star. However, this sanction (which Thomas served this past weekend) clearly did not punctuate the fierce discourse online.
While Thomas drew some sympathy in light of her claims regarding death threats, other netizens have insisted that she was the instigator in this situation, given her actions towards Clark.
DeWanna Bonner Claims To Have Received Death Threats in Aftermath of Alyssa Thomas-Caitlin Clark Incident
According to another report from Annie Costabile of The Athletic, even Alyssa Thomas’ fiancée DeWanna Bonner has gotten caught in the crossfire.
“Bonner also said she has been inundated with messages, including racial slurs and she has received death threats to her and her family. The Athletic has obtained screenshots of nearly a dozen texts, direct messages and comments on her social media pages sent to Bonner and her family via social media and personal cell phone numbers.”
Bonner, who plays alongside Thomas in Phoenix, added that she “shared” these messages with the Mercury’s security team. She also claimed that she hasn’t personally heard from Engelbert “in years.”
