Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve is one of the WNBA’s more established active coaches. She has won the WNBA championship four times and been named Coach of the Year on four different occasions. When it comes to showing passion for her players, Reeve’s resume backs it up. Once again, though, it showed on Sunday in an 84-79 loss to the Washington Mystics.
At the 5:42 mark of the third quarter, Lynx forward Natasha Howard and Mystics guard Cotie McMahon were boxing each other to get a rebound. The two then got tangled up, and Howard was seemingly yanked by McMahon. Seeing this, Reeve jumped up and down while beseeching the referees to review the call. Both players got into a scuffle and were eventually separated.
WNBA fans and spectators started comparing Reeve’s reaction to how other WNBA coaches would.
“Steph White has never and would never act like this for Caitlin [Clark],” one fan claimed.
“@IndianaFever how a coach stands up for her players & takes one for the team!!” another fan exclaimed.
“That’s just an act Cheryl does to get a more favorable call,” a user said.
Other users all over X/Twitter dropped their takes on what happened.
“Tied up at first then yanked on purpose,” one fan pointed out.
“She literally just plays ball. Now I love competitiveness but don’t be like that towards quiet players,” another fan shared.
“I’m so desensitized to people getting mauled and held from watching the Fever that I didn’t even think this was that bad lol 😂,” another user wrote.
“So tired of these commentators framing fouls as accidents and saying things like, ‘Oooh they got tied up,'” a fan posted.
After the sequence, the referees conducted a lengthy review. Unfortunately for Reeve and the Lynx, a technical foul was called on Howard. Mystics guard Georgia Amoore then had a freebie from the charity stripe, and the momentum may have shifted to Washington then. Still, both Howard and McMahon finished the game for their teams.
The Minnesota Lynx lose to the Washington Mystics despite Cheryl Reeve’s passionate reaction
Unfortunately for the Minnesota Lynx faithful, their team still lost to the Washington Mystics by five points, 84-79, even after Cheryl Reeve’s viral reaction. The Lynx already had a seven-point lead at halftime. But the Mystics adjusted well in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter. There, Washington outscored host Minnesota 28-19 en route to the victory.
The Mystics were led by guard Sonia Citron, who had a team-high 21 points to go along with three rebounds, two assists, one steal and a block in 33 minutes. Meanwhile, for the Lynx, rookie Olivia Miles led the team with a game-high 22 points, five rebounds, six assists and two blocks in 32 minutes.
