Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham reasserted her stance against the participation of transgender women in women’s sports. However, she also maintained that it does not make her anti-trans.
In an ESPN interview published on Tuesday, Cunningham’s stance against transgender women is rooted in competitive fairness only.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” Cunningham told ESPN. She wants to “protect young girls in a locker room” and believes girls “shouldn’t have to go against biological men” in women’s sports.
“I said what I said, I think it’s common sense,” she told reporters before the game against the Sun. “I think I’ll always believe in that; it’s really important to protect children. And that’s little girls, who are also involved in that category. I stand by what I said, and I’ll always believe that.”
Resharing her comments on Instagram, Cunningham’s sister Lindsey felt proud and supported the Fever star on the topic.
“A statement such as this shouldn’t be controversial or political, but is somehow both in today’s society,” Lindsey wrote. “I am so proud of the way @sophie_cham lead with love, and the bravery she has displayed to advocate for girls in sport. As she so beautifully stated, there’s room for everybody, but not at the expense of girls & women in sport. I hope the way Sophie has used her platform will inspire all of us to stand boldly in our truth, too!”

During the same ESPN interview, Sophie Cunningham addressed the viral “MAGA Barbie” label, sharing that it does not represent her actual political beliefs. Because of her public stance on transgender participation in women’s sports and the perception that her views align with conservative politics, many trolls have associated her with that nickname.
“I’m very much in the middle,” she said. “I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And that’s all I’ve ever said about my political beliefs.
After coming to Indiana, Cunningham has become a vital cog of the Fever, alongside stars like Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. Through 26 games this season, she is averaging 9.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game.
