On the heels of Caitlin Clark slamming media narratives as “emotionally exhausting,” ESPN’s Monica McNutt delivered some criticism of her own. Appearing on the network’s “Women’s Sports Sundays” with Malika Andrews, McNutt argued that Clark has some shortcomings to work on as she deals with media coverage.
“I do think, as she continues to matriculate in this league, there’s room for a little bit more accountability and self-awareness in terms of her role in the larger sisterhood, if she sees it that way, in the WNBA.”
In turn, Bobby Burack of the conservative sports site OutKick had a strong opinion on McNutt’s views. On Monday, Burack invoked the name of a recently dismissed sports personality when he tweeted his rebuttal of McNutt.
“@McNuttMonica should definitely be the next person ESPN fires. She has a clear issue with white women, doesn’t know who Barry Sanders is, has a weird attitude and isn’t good on TV. She wants to be the female Ryan Clark.”
Last week, Ryan Clark was informed of ESPN’s decision to cut ties with him midway through a live broadcast. According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, one of the catalysts for Clark’s dismissal was his on-air squabble with his colleague Peter Schrager, whom he called out for being a “nonplayer” during a football-related argument.
This is not the first time that McNutt’s opinions on CC have drawn strong reactions. Last year, the ESPN analyst was blasted for her take on Clark committing a flagrant foul on Angel Reese. McNutt said that, whenever something goes down between the two All-Stars, one of them is “automatically put as a victim.” She went on to speculate on the magnitude of the online discourse “if this was the other way around.”

Another analyst who put Monica McNutt on blast was WNBA podcaster Rosalina Lee, who said that the ESPN personality was going in circles.
Lee, a former Fever beat writer, had a tone of exasperation as she slammed McNutt’s opinion on Clark in a tweet posted on Monday.
“Monica McNutt is clinging onto a dying narrative. The more this tired (and misrepresented) take gets recycled, the less people take this type of media seriously”
From the looks of it, McNutt has stirred some controversy that CC supporters won’t be forgetting any time soon.
