Shortly after a 3-point fueled All-Star Game outing on Saturday, Caitlin Clark found herself in the middle of another controversy, as ESPN analyst Monica McNutt asked the Indiana star to “take more accountability in terms of her role in the larger sisterhood.”
Barstool founder Dave Portnoy took offense with McNutt’s comment, calling out McNutt for adding unnecessary pressure on the Indiana star’s shoulders. On his “Wake Up Barstool” podcast on Monday, Portnoy said:
“You have Monica McNutt come on ESPN right after and blame basically Caitlin for everything that’s happening. Be like, “Well, if she wants to be part of the sisterhood,” that’s her words. Like, she’s going to be better at including people and doing this. Monica, that also is fire, a little, to me.”“Caitlin Clark hasn’t asked for any of this. Caitlin Clark has never said she’s the face of the league. Caitlin Clark has never made anything about race.”
This came right after Caitlin Clark spoke about the exhausting nature of WNBA discourse that she has been a part of throughout the season, as she called out the media in her postgame interview on Saturday:
“I think a lot of it is not always based in reality. I feel like media and journalism have a responsibility to tell the stories, and a lot of the time you guys are the ones controlling the narratives about what people read and what people talk about. And a lot of that is sometimes so far out of touch with what is reality. And that can be confusing to somebody that’s 24 and trying to navigate life and trying to help her team win a championship.”
Caitlin Clark Recaps Second WNBA All-Star Game Appearance
While she has been in the league for three seasons, the 2026 WNBA All-Star Game was Clark’s second appearance in the event after missing out with an injury last season.
Clark, who wanted to set a laid-back tone from the start, was heard telling her teammates that she was “going to be launching bombs” during a segment before the game.
And Clark did exactly as she promised, shooting a total of 15 3s, making five in the process. Clark also set the record for the longest average distance 3-point shot in history, beating Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard in the process.
After the game, Clark also addressed missing out on the All-Star Game last year:
“Obviously, last year really stunk, and it being in our home city. You never want to miss that. You never want to miss that for the fans. I love to show up and get to compete and play. Obviously, you only get 20 minutes; sometimes, you want to play more.”
Clark will return to action on Tuesday as the Fever take on the Storm in Seattle.
