Dallas Wings head coach Jose Fernandez recently made headlines when he recently called out Paige Bueckers and the rest of the team publicly. Despite choosing Azzi Fudd as the first pick at the WNBA draft, the Wings have struggled to find their best combination. The star of the season is far from ideal. With a team like Dallas, expectations are sky high.
There has already been some unrest as well. Couple of days ago, a video from an interview went viral where Jose Fernandez openly condemned some of the shortcomings of his squad. Now, this is Fernandez’s first season with the team as well. So it is natural that everyone is getting used to each other.
Just 2 days later, Wings head coach has called out Paige Bueckers. This time around he made sure to put across that he was joking unlike last time. He was asked about Wings’ loss vs the Minnesota Lynx and Paige Bueckers failing to guard her player.
Paige Bueckers got caught switched on a post during their loss vs Minnesota. Fernandez jokingly commented, “We don’t want her on Natasha Howard or Kiki or Austin… as much as she thinks she’s probably gotten bigger and can.”

Fernandez did not hold back when he received criticism for not starting Azzi Fudd despite her being the number one pick.
“Minutes here, minutes there. Whatever minutes [Awak Kuier] gets, with her size, she can protect the basket,” Fernandez said. “Correct? So, I don’t know. Whatever minute she gets, or Maddy [Siegrist] gets, or [Alanna Smith] gets, or Fudd gets, just defend. Make use of your minutes, make shots, play the right way.
He reiterated that the player should not worry about game time. Rather they should be invested in making use of the minutes they are getting to the best of their abilities. “There’s selfishness in the locker room,” he called out the Wings. He also said that the teams who find success do not worry about such stuff. And the objective should always be to win first.
