On Sunday, Angel Reese and her Atlanta Dream squad suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the defending WNBA champions, the Las Vegas Aces. This outcome led to Reese’s words in a pre-game interview blowing up in her face.

Speaking to NBC’s Jordan Cornette, Reese offered praise for three-time WNBA champion A’ja Wilson while also giving props to herself.

“She’s obviously a great player. She’s the MVP for a reason. But I know I’m a great player too, and I can guard her well.”

The weekend showdown, however, did not go in favor of Angel Reese, who put up just nine points and eight rebounds after getting a double-double in the Dream’s first two games. Meanwhile, A’ja Wilson had 20 points on 50.0% shooting from the field, along with six rebounds.

Taking note of these numbers (as well as the quote in the pre-game interview), fans went at Reese on social media.

“What a delusional idiot! No sense of humility considering she has not finished anything she has been in past 3 years.”

“Now you know why they are called mebounds. It’s always about her. The only problem is she sucks a**!!”

“Angel Reese talks like a superstar and plays like a twitter debate”

    “It’s always about her… the bricklayer…”

“Can we finally stop pushing the narrative that this woman is good at anything?”

“She’s that dumb that she doesn’t understand they’re asking these questions just so they can make fun of her later on”

Reese’s confidence speaks for itself, but on Sunday, Wilson helped to stop her from backing up her big talk.

If there’s anyone who has Angel Reese’s back, it’s her head coach Karl Smesko, who continued to shower her with praise despite the Dream’s loss to the Aces.

“What I get to see every day is someone who’s working really hard in practice, wants to learn, asking for extra film…She’s motivated to become one of the best players.”

Smesko added that he expects Reese to eventually become “more comfortable” with the Dream’s style of play, acknowledging that the two-time WNBA All-Star is still in a transition phase after coming over from the Chicago Sky in the offseason.
