Now in her 11th WNBA season, Breanna Stewart has to contend with a new generation of competitors who are vying to be the best in the league. Just this past Friday, the New York Liberty star found herself in a fierce battle against the upstart Olivia Miles as the Minnesota Lynx came to town.
Stewie ended up on the winning side, finishing with 36 points and 7 rebounds to lead New York to a 99-86 victory. On social media, she received an outpour of support from fans following this win over the league-leading Lynx.
“36 points…pretty solid for the fifth-best player in the league,” one fan tweeted.
Clearly, some fans haven’t gotten over the WNBA player rankings ESPN released this week. On this list, Stewart was ranked below A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Caitlin Clark, and Paige Bueckers.
But when it comes to scoring, the eight-time WNBA All-Star is second to none on the Liberty roster. This season, Stewart leads her team with 20.1 points per game. Her 1.4 blocks per outing are also no. 1 on the team, and only Jonquel Jones averages more rebounds than her in New York.
With the win over the Lynx on Saturday, the Liberty improved to 13-8, overtaking the Atlanta Dream to become the top team in the Eastern Conference. New York’s solid start is thanks in large part to Stewie, who is building an MVP case with her impressive numbers.
Breanna Stewart Achieves Scoring Milestone in Victory Over Lynx
Breanna Stewart’s 36-point output on Saturday was the 33rd 30-point performance of her storied career. This accomplishment allowed her to move into solo third place on the elite list of WNBA players with the most 30+ point games in league history.
Stewart was previously tied with Angel McCoughtry, who had 32 games with 30 or more points. Now, Stewie trails A’ja Wilson (43) and the all-time leader, Diana Taurasi (54).
