Jason Whitlock Questions Caitlin Clark’s 9-Day Delay in Addressing Alyssa Thomas Controversy

More than nine days after her controversial on-court incident with Alyssa Thomas, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has finally spoken out publicly. However, her delayed response has now drawn criticism from Jason Whitlock.

The controversy escalated after Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas was suspended for one game for hitting Clark in the neck. In the aftermath, Thomas revealed that she had received death threats and racist messages online.

When Clark finally addressed the media on Friday, she reiterated that she believed the foul was a flagrant and that the referees needed to do better. Clark also condemned the hate that Thomas had been receiving.

As I’ve stood up here and said before, like the harassment, the hate, none of that is okay,” Clark said. “That goes for the opposing team we play. That goes for my teammates. That goes for my coaches. There should never be a question of character. Like, I’ve always stood up here and said that, and that’s truly what I believe. That’s how I was raised.”

While this message has been praised by many Fever fans and pundits alike, sports commentator Jason Whitlock argued that her response took too long.

“I’m rooting for Caitlin. Her story is fun to watch,” Whitlock said. “However, she took nine days to comment on a situation involving her. Nine days is a lot of prep time.”

Whitlock felt that Clark should have focused on things she could actually handle, rather than complaining about outside noise.

“Her message was the refs missed a call and the media discussed her in a way she didn’t like,” Whitlock added. “Control what you can control. She can’t control the refs or the media.”

There is an obvious need to improve how games are officiated across the league. Missing some obvious calls is bound to frustrate fans of different teams from time to time, but making an effort to address those issues is something the WNBA should seriously look into this season.

Caitlin Clark Calls Out Media for Downplaying WNBA Talent by Dragging Out the Alyssa Thomas Controversy

Caitlin Clark did not hold back when speaking with reporters, especially about how the media dragged out the controversy for so long that it overshadowed her team’s performances and the league’s achievements.

Clark expressed clear frustration and was very honest with the reporters.

“It’s really interesting to me, because I turn the TV on on Sunday, and that game was on Wednesday, and that’s all people are still talking about,” Clark said. “And I feel like that’s just a real disservice to our league. I get it. You have to talk about it. You talk about whether it’s flagrant, or whatever it is. But to continue to beat down, beat down, and then for the narrative to be taken other places, that’s really just not acceptable.”

On top of that, Clark pointed out how the media’s chosen narrative pushed down other achievements when it should have been highlighting actual games. She explicitly reminded reporters that their coverage needs to improve.

“I also felt bad for my teammates! They played on Friday, and they dominated; they played really well, but nobody wanted to talk about that. They just wanted to talk about everything else… It’s all of our jobs to refocus the narratives a lot of the time. And we can do better at that, and it will help our game grow a lot more,” she added.

There is plenty of room for improvement from just about everyone involved. However, Clark was incredibly transparent with the media, and her comments painted a clear picture of how she has been feeling throughout the controversy. It will be interesting to see what happens with Clark and how the rest of the Fever are officiated moving forward.
