Paige Bueckers Predicted to End WNBA’s Historic Guard MVP Drought By Veteran Broadcaster Amid Her Red-Hot Run

Dallas’ Paige Bueckers has been terrific for the Wings, who, on paper, looked like one of the worst teams in the WNBA heading into the season. But lo and behold, the Wings are actually a solid team, thanks in large part to Bueckers’ spectacular play.

On Friday, the Wings extended their season-best winning streak to four games with a 108-95 victory over the Toronto Tempo in Montreal. Bueckers poured in a season-high 34 points while adding six rebounds and six assists on 13-of-22 shooting. With the performance, she became tied as the fastest guard since 1999 to reach 450 points and 100 assists in a season.

She has also been on an otherworldly tear lately, averaging 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists on 54% shooting over her last five games. She might just be the most complete player in the game right now, and fans are already making a strong case for her MVP candidacy. It’s worth noting that no guard has won the WNBA MVP award since Diana Taurasi in 2009. However, veteran sports broadcaster Cindy Brunson believes Bueckers could be the one to end that drought.

“A guard in the @WNBA hasn’t won an MVP since DT in 2009. I could easily see Paige ending that drought once A’ja is done rewriting the record books,” Brunson wrote on X after Friday’s game.

The season is only at the halfway point, and A’ja Wilson remains the frontrunner for MVP, showing no signs of slowing down. However, Bueckers is rapidly building momentum in the race. If Dallas can continue its winning streak and Bueckers keeps playing at this level, she could find herself firmly in the MVP conversation as the season progresses.

Paige Bueckers and Marina Mabrey Star in Montreal as WNBA Sets Attendance Record

Montreal, Canada, is now the record holder for the largest crowd in WNBA regular-season history.

Montreal drew 20,996 fans to the Bell Centre arena for the city’s first-ever WNBA game. The historic matchup broke the previous regular-season record of 20,711 set in Washington on Sept. 19, 2024, against Indiana Fever. The league’s two largest crowds overall remain the 22,076 fans who attended the 2003 and 2007 WNBA Finals in Detroit.

While Paige Bueckers paced the Dallas Wings, Toronto’s Marina Mabrey also put on a show, dropping 34 points for the Tempo. Following the result, the Wings sit fourth in the standings with a 15-8 record, while the expansion Tempo drop to 11th at 9-13.
