Sue Bird’s fiancée, Megan Rapinoe, blasted U.S. President Donald Trump and the USA men’s hockey team that won the Olympic gold on Thursday. During the soccer legend’s “A Touch More” podcast, she said that she would have never allowed Trump to enter a locker room that she was a part of.
Clay Travis, a political commentator and Outkick founder, slammed Rapinoe for her comments:
“Megan Rapinoe, who believes men should be allowed to play women’s soccer, says as a team captain she would have never allowed President Trump to call the locker room after a big win. And this, boys and girls, is how the US women’s soccer team went from wildly popular to disliked.”
Sue Bird’s fiancée started her comments by calling Trump a “clown,” an adjective she also used on the victorious men’s hockey team. After the gold-medal-winning performance, Trump called them and joked about inviting the women’s hockey team to the White House or face impeachment.
While the men’s hockey team spent some time with Trump in the White House, the women rejected Trump’s invitation.
Rapinoe, who supports transgender women to play in women’s sports, criticized the men’s team for laughing at the U.S. president’s joke. She went further by saying that, as the former captain of the U.S. national women’s soccer team, she never allowed Trump to enter their locker room.
Heading into the 2019 World Cup, Sue Bird’s fiancée told Trump that she and her teammates would not go to the White House if they won. He responded that they would have to win first to get an invitation. Later, he added that he would still invite them regardless of how they would do.
Rapinoe eventually led Team USA to the gold medal and made good on her promise not to accept Trump’s invitation to visit the White House.
“Co-opted by a clown”: Sue Bird’s fiancée on the US men’s hockey team accepting President Donald Trump’s White House invitation.
Sue Bird’s fiancée, Megan Rapinoe, did not hold back in ripping the U.S. men’s hockey team. The two-time World Cup winner said that they “ruined” what she called “their utter moment of glory” by celebrating with President Donald Trump.
Rapinoe added:
“They allowed themselves to be co-opted by a clown. And now you’re a clown. You look like a clown.”
Rapinoe continued that the men’s hockey team cornered themselves by having FBI Director Kash Patel and President Donald Trump talk to them on the phone. She said that the athletes thought of their involvement as “a threat.” The 2019 Ballon d’Or Féminine winner added that the team could have avoided that situation by refusing to talk to either government official.
