Caitlin Clark has faced many challenges during her three years in the WNBA. Whether it be an unrest with coach Stephanie White, her injury troubles, or her issues with the referees, she has been surrounded by controversy all season.
The Fever star has been under a minutes restriction due to her lingering back injury problem and has gotten seven technical fouls, which is tied for most in the league. Her run-ins with opponents and referees have also garnered a lot of attention from fans and journalists alike.
Many believe that players, referees, and mainstream media have an agenda against the Indiana Fever star. And $25 million-worth journalist Clay Travis holds the same belief. He appeared on a Fox News segment and presented his opinions about criticisms against Caitlin Clark.
“I think Caitlin Clark should leave the WNBA and start her own league. A league that would pursue basketball excellence no matter what your race or your gender was. I mean this. I think Caitlin Clark is more valuable than the entirety of the WNBA right now,” Travis said (4:11).
Travis also made a claim about why the sports media and the WNBA “hates” Clark.
“As far left wing as the average political journalist is, the average sports media journalist is further left wing than that. The sports media is more biased to the far left than the political media is. So, within the prism of identity politics which is all that left wing analysis can exist within, as a straight white woman, Caitlin Clark is a threat to a lesbian black league. And so everything that she does cannot stand alone as it should in all of athletics,” he said (2:21).
He called Caitlin Clark one of the best players in the WNBA right now. He claimed that if she were from a different race and a different sexual orientation, she would have been celebrated more in the WNBA.
What did Nancy Armour say about Caitlin Clark?
Nancy Armour is a USA Today columnist who recently wrote a controversial piece about Clark’s on-court antics. Armour’s tone in the article pinched a lot of fans, and many criticized her for the attack on the Fever star.
“Indiana Fever All-Star Caitlin Clark and her enablers must take the rest of us for idiots. The fouls they claim occurred? The ‘contusion’ she says she suffered? The technicals that aren’t deserved? Clark doesn’t suddenly become invisible when she’s involved in a physical play, so we can see what actually happened. Which is that Clark is flopping. And her histrionics while doing so are putting other people in danger,” Armour said.
“A white nationalist faction to Clark’s fandom that is deeply, deeply problematic, made even more so because the WNBA is made up predominantly of Black women, many of them queer. When Clark claims fouls that don’t exist, when she goes on profanity-laced tirades at referees, those racists see her as a white woman in need of saving and take matters into their own hands,” she continued.
Her argument entailed that Clark should recognize the broader implications of her actions and conduct herself so as not to weaponize a certain section of the fanbase.
