Outspoken commentator Skip Bayless took shots at Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark’s detractors in his latest rant.
On Thursday, Bayless mentioned USA TODAY columnist Nancy Armour, who has been one of Clark’s most vocal media critics over the past two years. In her July column, Armour showed that Clark’s “flopping” could set a bad precedent for young basketball players. She also targeted a faction of Clark’s fans who indulge in racist behaviors against other WNBA players.
Bayless, who said he met Armour before in Chicago, felt upset by her column against Clark. The basketball analyst turned it around and shared how the Fever star has helped the league grow.
“So you’re saying that it’s Caitlin Clark’s fault by her actions on the floor that the racists are coming out to attack other WNBA players, many of them Black and some of them queer,” Bayless said. “That’s what you’re saying, that Caitlin Clark’s behavior on the floor is instigating racism that these other women see through the comments, experience through the comments, that they choose to open up on their social media.
“This is insane to me and so unfair to Caitlin Clark, because the point about Caitlin Clark is she did come in and save this league. She turned around this league’s popularity because she’s the most entertaining player to watch in the league. At least that’s my view, and it seems like many people share that view.”
Bayless also noted how Clark has battled physicality in her rookie year, and since then she has become a stronger version of herself. She is fighting back, defending herself, arguing with referees and exchanging trash talk with players who instigated her. In short, as per Bayless, Clark is fighting “fire with fire.”
Caitlin Clark Urged to Sue Nancy Armour and USA Today
Not only Skip Bayless, but even conservative political activist Riley Gaines is standing in support of Caitlin Clark after Nancy Armour’s controversial remarks.
Apart from blaming Clark for instigating racial behavior among her fans, Armour compared the situation to Emmett Till, who was killed in 1955 after being falsely accused by a white woman.
Such comments have created controversy among basketball circles, with former NCAA swimmer Gaines stepping into the debate and urging the Fever star to take legal action against USA Today’s columnist.
“I hope Caitlin Clark sues the pants off of USA Today and Nancy Armour,” Gaines tweeted.
So far, Clark herself has not made any comments against Armour’s remarks.
