Kelsey Plum’s debut season in Los Angeles may have been previously described as a slow start, but that isn’t the case this year. The LA Sparks star has been on a crazy run to start the season.
In the first six games of the season, she has scored five 25-point games. That includes a season-high 38 points in a 101-95 win over her former team, the Las Vegas Aces, on Saturday.
Not only that, she had nine assists and four rebounds on 12-of-17 shooting. She was also nearly perfect from deep, going 6-of-7 from 3-point range and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. Plum now leads the league in scoring at 26.8 points per game, ahead of former teammate A’ja Wilson, who is averaging 24.8 per game.
The 32-year-old is scoring at a rate many fans may not have necessarily predicted. Of course, she won’t maintain the same pace for the entire season, but given the highest scoring averages the league has ever seen from A’ja Wilson at 22.8 points per game, it’s safe to say she will likely remain among the elite scorers this season.
There have been moments where she looks very dominant, almost like she takes over entire games and the opposition can’t stop her.
Kelsey Plum has really matured her game on both ends of the court and continues to be a difference-maker for a Sparks team still trying to find the consistency they were used to, but not quite there yet. Kelsey Plum has elevated her game on both ends of the court and continues to be a difference-maker for a Sparks team still trying to bounce back from a crisis, having missed the playoffs in each of the past five seasons.
She has been the early MVP favorite by many, there’s no question about it. Not only has she been effective offensively, but she has arguably been the Sparks’ best two-way player as well. Not much is going right for the Sparks right now as they are 2-2 to start the season, but Kelsey Plum’s game has been a highlight.
If LA somehow figures out their slow start and finds themselves inside the top six, that would make a strong case for Kelsey Plum’s MVP chances, who has yet to win one in her career.
Kelsey Plum thanks her coach and teammates for hot start
Kelsey Plum is thankful to head coach Lynne Roberts and her teammates, who have helped her get off to a terrific start.
Speaking to the media after the Las Vegas Aces game, Plum said:
“Honestly, I’m trying to go out and be super patient,” she said. “You get to a point in the league where you’re seeing a lot of different coverages. I really appreciate that the coach has a lot of trust in me, and my teammates trust me to make decisions.”
Kelsey Plum is already a two-time WNBA champion and she’s trying to carry the Los Angeles Sparks into the playoffs. LA is in the middle of a four-game road trip. They are 1-1 so far and have two more games before heading back home to face the Aces again.
