Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White are under a keen public eye. Clark suffered one of the worst games of her career with just 6 points when Fever had a blowout loss vs Portland Fire. The game’s highlight was the very heated exchange between Clark and White. The video of the interaction went viral and speculations took over.
There have been rumors about a deeper issue between Caitlin Clark and her coach Stephanie White. Both Clark and White came out and quickly dismissed all rumors. Both said that they ride for each other and the on-court argument was just two competitive people wanting to win.
After the blowout loss, Fever apparently conducted a meeting which Sophie Cunningham called “much needed” (3:08). “We can’t be playing like that. We’re too good. We needed that meeting,” she revealed to the media. However, her teammate Kelsey Mitchell had no idea that the news of the meeting is public. So when asked about it, Mitchell was shocked that the reporters knew.
“How y’all know we had a meeting?” Kelsey Mitchell asked the reporters (0:12). The reporters answered that Sophie told them. To that, Mitchell replied with an awkward reaction, “Oh, well…” She gestured with her hands and had sort of a cryptic laugh.
She proceeded to say, “I think it’s part of being a family. If you think that everything is glitz and glamor, then you’re mistaken. I think that hard times make you or hard times can break you. And hopefully it don’t break us.”
Mitchell said that the last few games, the Fever culture has been tested. She preferred that all this happens at this stage of the season rather than later. She also shared how the meeting was about having a little bit more grace. After getting “punched in the face” during the weekend, Mitchell thinks that Fever will grow from it.
Sophie Cunningham shares inside scoop of Fever’s meeting
The last two games really hit Fever in the face. After a blowout loss vs Portland Fire, it was clear that Caitlin Clark and co desperately needed to regroup and come strong in the next game. Sophie Cunningham shared that the Fever held a coach-player led meeting to sort their issues.
Sophie admitted that the lack of willingness to defend is one of the major things that is hurting the team right now. She believes that they have the personnel to do the something that’s “not fun” and “no one wants to do” (1:37). She continued to say that they need to execute their defensive plans way better. According to her, Fever have been playing just one defensive scheme and now really have to play their best basketball.
In this much needed meeting, the team gathered to discuss these issues. They came together as a team and showed belief in each other. The performance vs Fire wasn’t acceptable to the Fever and they just wanted to flush that game away to move on to the next one.
