This week, Sophie Cunningham drew plenty of attention with her comments on her new contract with the Indiana Fever. On her “Show Me Something” podcast, Cunningham indicated that she was “a little frustrated” with the deal she signed, saying that it served as a “wake-up call” for her not to be complacent.

Just a day after the podcast episode came out, Cunningham cleared the air in a media availability from the Fever training camp. The veteran guard made sure to point out the motivating factor behind her comments.

“If you listen to the full clip, you’d really understand that I just wanted to be somewhere for more than one year. I’m almost 30 years old, and I want to have a home.”

Sophie Cunningham, who was traded to the Fever last year, also explained that she had grown comfortable with her teammates in Indianapolis.

“When you find a group of girls who really make you fall in love with basketball again…you want to hold on to that.”

On and off the court, the chemistry between Cunningham and the likes of Caitlin Clark and Lexie Hull has been well documented. If she intends to stay in Indiana for the long-term, she’ll have to continue proving her worth on both ends of the floor in the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, Sophie Cunningham has already endeared herself to Raven Johnson, the Fever’s first-round selection in the 2026 WNBA draft.

In a media availability, Johnson gave a shoutout to the veterans who have made her feel right at home.

“Sophie Cunningham, Caitlin Clark, Lexie Hull, Kelsey Mitchell…Great people to be around. They help me when I don’t know things. They know the system pretty well. I asked them a lot of questions yesterday.”

Both Cunningham and Johnson have a reputation for providing hustle on the defensive end. Their presence in the backcourt bodes well for the Fever’s defensive intensity this season.
