After having a bit of a down year last season, Jonquel Jones appears to have bounced back in the 2026 campaign. On Wednesday, the former Finals MVP achieved a statistical feat that solidified her as one of the most lethal double-double threats in the game.
In the New York Liberty’s 97-82 victory over the Toronto Tempo, Jones finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds, becoming one of three players in franchise history to record multiple games of 15+ points and 15+ boards.
The two other Liberty players who accomplished this feat are Tina Charles, who led the WNBA in scoring and rebounding in 2016, and Breanna Stewart, who moved to New York alongside Jones in 2023.
In 10 games this season, Jones is averaging 13.6 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.1 blocks. She is No. 6 in rebounds and tied for 11th with Stewart in shots rejected.
With Jones imposing her will in the paint, the Liberty are No. 5 in rebounds, No. 6 in defensive rating and No. 7 in scoring. Though Jones has gotten off to a solid start this season, she’ll have to sustain her stellar play as the Liberty look to keep up with the Minnesota Lynx (7-2) and the Atlanta Dream (6-2).
“It’s Always Great to See Those People”: Jonquel Jones Sends Shoutout to Former Liberty HC and Teammate After Win Over Tempo
The Liberty squad has changed its identity in more ways than one over the past 12 months. Though Jonquel Jones has had to bid farewell to some familiar faces, she’s maintained respect for them.
After New York picked up its sixth win of the season, Jones gave a shoutout to Toronto head coach Sandy Brondello and forward Nyara Sabally, both of whom used to share the Liberty locker room with her.
“It’s always great to see those people and spend time with them,” she said of Brondello and Sabally in the post-game interview.
Jones and Sabally were on the Liberty roster that won the 2024 WNBA title under Brondello.
