Jessica Shepard completely outplayed A’ja Wilson and the Aces on Thursday night with a record-setting triple-double, leading the Wings to a 95-87 comeback win. Shepard became the first player to score 22 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists, shooting 8-for-13. Alyssa Thomas was the only other player to record a 20-20-10 game. Thomas had 21 points, 20 rebounds and 12 assists in 2023 vs. the Lynx.

Shepard’s record is one-of-one as she scored one more point than Thomas, making it an unprecedented feat. Shepard made the most of her opportunity as the offensive hub at the five with Alanna Smith sidelined.

Shepard’s performance stunned the WNBA world, which was on its feet after the historic achievement. What’s more impressive is that it came against reigning MVP and Co-Defensive Player of the Year, A’ja Wilson, who doesn’t get outplayed that often. Wilson finished with 21 points, seven rebounds and three assists while shooting 10 of 24.

Here’s how fans reacted to Jesica Shepard’s record-setting stats:

“Jessica Shepard 2026 MVP,” one fan said.

“Jessica Shepard put up Jokic’s stat line for the Wings tonight, omg,” another said

An Aces fan also joined in, saying:

“Becky needs to put the film up, and have ALL the bigs explain that Jessica Shepard explosion game…A’One included.”

“Jessica Shepard has been do everything for the wings ever since joining,” one fan added.

“Who knew that Jessica Shepard would be a legit MVP candidate in April,” another wrote.

Wings coaching staff could be under pressure to start Jessica Shepard, Azzi Fudd together

The Wings coaching staff has been under immense pressure from the fan base to start Jessica Shepard and Azzi Fudd together, especially when the team hasn’t performed well. With Alanna Smith sidelined on Thursday, Dallas made significant tweaks. The coaching staff probably replaced Odyssey Sims with Fudd to add some size to the lineup and cover for Smith’s absence. Meanwhile, Maddy Siegrist replaced Smith.

The move worked wonders as Shepard produced a historical stat line, while Fudd put up her second 20-point game of the year. Fudd had 22 points on 9 of 15 shots, including 3 of 5 from deep. She was tied for the highest-plus minus on the team with Paige Bueckers (+15). Meanwhile, Shepard had more space to work with and the Wings got to play more through her, which created shot opportunites for others.

The Wings trailed by 13 in the first half but completely turned it around in the second with a 50-34 run. With that performance coming against a contender, it makes even more sense for Wings coach Jose Fernandez to let this young starting lineup develop chemistry.
