Caitlin Clark hit a last-second 3-pointer to lift the Indiana Fever past the Washington Mystics 78-76 on Monday night. Sophie Cunningham, who passed the ball in the dying seconds to Clark, later revealed how scared she was before Clark hit the shot.
The season has been full of ups and downs for the Fever (6-5). There has been speculation around a rift between Clark and Fever coach Stephanie White due to their public disagreements and heated exchanges on the court. Conservative sports journalist Jason Whitlock has given his views on their relationship multiple times.
After the Fever topped the Mystics, Whitlock once again shared something he noticed after the win on X on Tuesday.
“Can anyone find good video of Caitlin Clark after hitting the game winner and the low-energy hand slap between Clark and Stephanie White? No hug, no chest bump. Two people barely acknowledging each other,” Whitlock posted.
There was a clear lack of energy between Clark and White while the Fever teammates and bench were extremely elated after the win. A Fever fan posted a slowed-down video of Clark and White’s exchange.
“Watch Caitlin’s facial expression change as she low fives Stephanie White after that game winner. Goes from smiling to no facial expression & no eye contact with SW, back to smiling,” the fan explained what he noticed.
Sophie Cunningham reveals not following Stephanie White’s plan
The clear change in expression and vibe was noticed by many fans apart from Jason Whitlock. While there have been disagreements between the two, both have maintained that they are two competitive individuals with one goal in their minds, and that’s winning.
Sophie Cunningham posted on her Instagram after the win. The post included one hilarious AI-generated image that said that Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham did not follow White’s plans.
This might indicate why the expression changed when Clark gave a subdued high five to White. But it could also mean nothing since the Fever won. Cunningham included the picture as a joke, and all that suggests is that White has a good bond with her players.
