Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever’s head coach Stephanie White have faced a lot of scrutiny after their very public and heated argument. They were seen yelling at each other in Fever’s game vs the Portland Fire. That was their second loss in a row and it induced a lot of rumors.
Many believed that it might lead to the end of the road for Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White. People blamed White for not maximizing Clark’s potential. While others pointed to her defensive shortcomings as a factor behind the Fever’s struggles. Jason Whitlock used his platform a lot of times to suggest that Clark needed a better head coach.
In an appearance on Whitlock’s podcast, Klay Thompson’s father and Lakers legend Mychal Thompson expressed his views on the whole Caitlin Clark situation. Before the podcast, he had posted on X and made the claim that Fever are “sick” of Caitlin Clark. He also suggested LA Sparks should sign her. He then backed Caitlin and explained why he made that claim.
“They’ve taken away Caitlin’s superpowers. And when you draft a player like Caitlin, like a Steph Curry, a Magic, an Isaiah Thomas, of course, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, when you have a player of that caliber of a Wemby, you play to their strengths and you build around a franchise player such as that,” Thompson said (3:49).
“And it seems like they brought the franchise player in to make them play the way they want to play as opposed to adopting to her style and what made her the most popular basketball player in the world when she was at Iowa,” he continued.
He also compared Caitlin Clark with Serena Williams, Shohei Ohtani, Larry Allen. According to Thompson, the situation is akin to someone deliberately preventing those legends from utilizing their greatest strengths.
Mychal Thompson claims that Fever did not like how Caitlin Clark played for the Hawkeyes
Whitlock asked Thompson why Fever are not able to build around Caitlin. Thompson shared that he thinks the basketball team did not like how Clark played for the Iowa Hawkeyes. They did draft her as the No.1 overall pick, but seemingly did so to raise the team’s standards.
“That’s why you drafted Caitlin Clark. That’s why we fell in love with her style. Tell us why she was the biggest attraction in all of team sports for a few years there,” he said (4:53).
“Because people had never seen this before from a woman basketball player the playing with like a like an Isaiah Thomas, Steph Curry type combination point guard she was something special unique and it seemed like the even though they drafted a number one they didn’t want that style in Indiana which just baffles me,” he added.
Can Fever prove Mychal wrong or does Caitlin Clark need to change her team for WNBA glory?
