Days after signing a new deal to return to the Indiana Fever, Sophie Cunningham made a personal announcement on social media. The Fever announced Sunday that Cunningham will be returning on a one-year, $665,000 deal.
On Thursday, Cunningham replied to a clip of herself on X showing her being baptized.
“Loving Jesus is fun, try it,” Cunningham wrote.
Cunningham’s baptism took place in Arizona at Christ’s Church of the Valley in Peoria. She also shared a video of her baptism on TikTok and wrote:
“I got baptized when I was little, but I was feeling a tug on my heart to do it on my terms as an adult.”
Cunningham’s deal with the Fever gives them long-term flexibility. With Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston set to be eligible for max extensions under the EPIC provision, signing any long-term contracts could harm the team’s ability to pay their star players.
Even Kelsey Mitchell, who was the team’s leading scorer last season, received a short-term deal, signing for one-year for $1.4 million. Following Cunningham’s return, the Fever have retained their core from last season, also bringing back Mitchell and Lexie Hull.
Sophie Cunningham’s statement on returning to the Indiana Fever
Sophie Cunningham shared a statement on social media, announcing her decision to return to the Indiana Fever for the 2026 WNBA season.
“I have a feeling this is going to be another special season, so I’m excited to get things started and to, of course, keep playing in front of the best fans in the WNBA. Let’s get spicy,” Cunningham said.
She grew into a fan-favorite last season, with many appreciating her shot-making ability and two-way impact. Cunningham played 30 games, averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
She was an established member of Stephanie White’s rotation before suffering a season-ending MCL tear in August. After the conclusion of the 2026 season, Cunningham will be taking her talents to Project B.
A new women’s basketball league is set to launch in November, which promises its players high pay and global exposure.
