Even as the WNBA and its players’ union remain divided over a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), the league released the 2026 season schedule on Wednesday, and one of the most intriguing matchups is Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever’s season opener, which will pit her against fellow former No. 1 pick and Rookie of the Year winner Paige Bueckers.
Fans quickly reacted to the headline matchup between the two guards serving as the Fever’s opening-night game, with some pointing out how Clark’s rivalry with Angel Reese has faded into the background.

Following an outstanding rookie campaign, Clark endured a quieter second season. She averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds over 13 games in her sophomore WNBA year, as injuries disrupted her rhythm.
Her time away from the floor allowed Bueckers to take some of the spotlight, and she capitalized with strong all-around production of 19.2 points, 5.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game.
With the two stars scheduled to meet on Opening Night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on May 9, fans shared their reactions.
“These two are definitely the biggest draw now, Angel just a side character 😂,” one fan said.
“2026 WNBA SEASON OPENS WITH CAITLIN VS PAIGE WE WILL BE THERE,” another said.
“I’ve missed CC so much,” another commented.
Clark and Bueckers matched up only once in 2025. Clark recorded 14 points, 13 assists and five steals in a 102-83 Fever win, while Bueckers finished with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Although the schedule has been announced, Front Office Sports reported that a potential work stoppage could push back the season due to the ongoing CBA stalemate.
“Releasing the 2026 schedule is a key step as we prepare for the WNBA’s 30th season and allows teams, partners, broadcasters, and fans to begin the essential planning for the year ahead,” a WNBA spokesperson told Front Office Sports.
The season is expected to feature 44 games per team, with the new Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo expansion franchises set to join the league.
