The Toronto Tempo and the New York Liberty on Sunday played a regular-season game that was one of the most intense of the 2026 WNBA season. The Tempo, led by former Liberty coach Sandy Brondello, beat the visiting Liberty 93-91.

With how tightly contested the matchup was, there was no shortage of added flair to it. One moment went viral when, at the 2:08 mark of the second quarter, Liberty guard Betnijah Laney-Hamilton and Tempo star Marina Mabrey got into an incident. Both players dove for a loose ball, and in the process, Laney-Hamilton hit Mabrey. Laney-Hamilton was called for a flagrant 1 foul, resulting in Mabrey going 1-for-2 from the line.

Women’s basketball fans and spectators believe that Mabrey flopped on the play, and it shouldn’t have been a flagrant foul on Laney-Hamilton.

“That was a flop. I don’t know if the shoe throwing was intentional or not but Mabery was flopping here,” one fan wrote.

Other users on X/Twitter defended Mabrey, believing that the flagrant foul was the right call.

Both players continued in the game, as Mabrey finished with a game-high 30 points, including three 3-pointers, to go with two rebounds, five assists and a block in 35 minutes. Laney-Hamilton tallied six points, three rebounds and one assist in 16 minutes off the bench. She was ejected late in the fourth quarter for throwing her teammate’s, Jonquel Jones, shoe at Mabrey’s back during a play review.

Marina Mabrey addressed how her team responded to the tensions that flared against the New York Liberty

Heading into the home matchup against the New York Liberty, the Toronto Tempo were in the midst of a four-game losing streak. Desperate for a win, their game against the Liberty proved to be a showcase of how the Tempo can bounce back with their backs against the wall. During her postgame interview on TSN Sports, Marina Mabrey discussed how Toronto (10-13) got the upset victory.

“I feel like we’ve lost a bunch in a row, and we kind of know what we needed to do, and I feel like we had that energy tonight,” Mabrey said (Timestamp: 0:29). “And then, honestly, down the stretch we were able to get a couple stops. And I mean, Stewey, Sabrina, JJ, they were amazing. So, I’m just happy we were able to rebound and get out of there.”
