Azzi Fudd has announced herself to the WNBA. She just had her breakout game after navigating through criticism since the WNBA draft. Many questioned why Azzi Fudd was drafted as the first round pick.
Many also speculated her relationship with Paige Bueckers as the reason. Both Paige and Azzi came out to stop those claims and now Azzi has shut down the doubters by her performance as well.
She scored 24 points in Dallas Wings’ big win vs the New York Liberty. She also had 2 rebounds, 3 assists aiding in her offensive contributions. She also gave substantial input in the defensive end with 3 steals and 2 blocks. Ever since her days with UConn, everyone was well aware of her shooting capabilities. That elite shooter tag is only being proven right as she now leads the WNBA in an interesting and impressive statline.
“Players in the WNBA shooting at least 55% from the field, at least 40% from 3-point range, and at least 90% from the free throw line: Azzi Fudd. End of list,” Dallas sports insider Mike Leslie reported via his X account.
Azzi Fudd stands alone in this combination of shooting percentages despite not getting a starting five spot in Jose Fernandez’s plans. With about 5-7 games in for every team, Kelsey Plum leads the points per game with 26.8, as A’ja Wilson stands 2nd with 24.8 and Caitlin Clark at 3rd with 23.8 points.
Kelsey Plum also leads with average 3 pointers made per game with 3.3 while Caitlin Clark has 3.2. With the shooting percentages as good as Azzi Fudd has been displaying, one would argue that she might just be able to compete with the stat leaders. She played 32 minutes in the game where she broke records. As Jose Fernandez said, Dallas Wings and Azzi Fudd might just be going in the right direction.
Azzi Fudd enter Dallas Wings’ history book after record breaking night
In Wings’ win over the Liberty, Azzi’s complete performance on both sides of the court was truly impressive. Considering the pressure of being the number one pick as well as the knowledge of getting micro analysed, Fudd must be proud of that display. She must have gotten a whole lot of confidence.
Other than the broader view, one specific stat with which Fudd should be surely proud of the number of three pointers she scored in the game. Azzi Fudd has entered the Wings’ history book as she became the rookie with most three pointers in a single game for Dallas. She scored 6 three pointers. She is also tied for second most points in a single third quarter with 17 points in the third quarter.
