Azzi Fudd has proved why the Dallas Mavericks chose her as the first pick in the 2026 WNBA draft. There are still speculations of a rift between Azzi Fudd and the management. People have been complaining since the start of the season that she should be in the starting five. However, head coach Jose Fernandez has maintained his stance of choosing his team without any external pressure.
Azzi Fudd balled out in Dallas Wings’ big win vs New York Liberty. She played 32 minutes off the bench. She scored 24 points with 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. It was a pretty evenly distributed and extremely impressive performance. Most importantly she shot 6-12 three pointers.
Azzi Fudd now holds the record for scoring most three pointers in a game for a rookie in Dallas Wings’ history. She has also equalled a scoring record. She is now tied for an all-time WNBA record for the second-most points in a single third quarter. She ended up scoring 17 points in the third quarter. Head coach Jose Fernandez, who has been under the cosh from media and fans, made his feelings clear after this inspiring display from the number 1 pick.
He was once again asked about Azzi Fudd coming off the bench and whether he thinks she is ready to be in the starting five. He acknowledged that the minutes have increased and growth will be there game by game. When asked again about her starting spot, he replied, “Is that important to you or to everybody that she starts or not?” while pointing towards the reporter.
He then said, “we are headed in that direction,” possibly suggesting that the number pick in the draft might soon find her place in the starting five.

She said that it just takes some time, some experience and some practice session. So it was the only matter of time before Fudd really came out and played her breakout game.
Bueckers acknowledged Fudd’s aggressive nature on the court and praised her shooting and her confidence. She complimented Azzi’s ability to not only go on the offense but also contribute defensively.
