Caitlin Clark has finally broken her silence. The Indiana Fever guard addressed the media on Friday, one week after returning to team practice following an injury that sparked a massive national debate.
Clark criticized the media for dragging out the drama surrounding her and Alyssa Thomas, saying it does a “real disservice to the league.”
“I turned the TV on Sunday, and that game was on Wednesday, and that’s all people are still talking about,” Clark said. “And I feel like that’s just a real disservice to our league. I get it – you have to talk about it. You discuss whether it’s flagrant, or whatever it is. But to continue to beat it down, beat it down, and then allow the narrative to be taken to other places, is just completely unacceptable. It’s a disservice to my team, but it’s also a disservice to every other team and player in this league.”
Clark acknowledged that the attention surrounding her comes with the territory but said the continued focus on the controversy had overshadowed other players and games across the league.
“There’s so much amazing talent, and there’s so many amazing players that are playing at an incredibly high rate,” Clark continued. “I remember watching them discuss it on TV, and I thought, I didn’t know they were going to discuss it. I was just watching the other games because I try to watch as much as I can. And I just felt, I honestly feel bad for the players that were playing the games those days. And also I feel bad for my teammates. They played on Friday, and they dominated, and they played really well, and nobody wanted to talk about that. They were just worried about everything else. I think 10-plus other games that had already happened to that point.”
Clark also pushed back against a headline suggesting she and the Fever were no longer enjoying the season, saying no one had asked her about it and urging the conversation to return to basketball.
“I remember seeing a headline that read like this season has been everything but fun, and just full of frustration for Clark and the Fever.” she said. “No one ever asked me that. That is wrong. Discuss my play. Discuss if I played bad. Discuss if I played good….I think it’s all of our jobs to help refocus the narrative a lot of the time, and we can do better at that. And I think it’ll help our game grow a lot more. And that goes for obviously the Fever and whatever.”
Clark’s message comes at a much-needed time, as the conversation surrounding the league has been about everything except basketball. Hopefully, the media takes note of her comments and shifts the focus back to the game, where it belongs.
Caitlin Clark shares major injury update
While she is feeling well enough to play, Sunday’s road game against the Las Vegas Aces will be too soon for her return to the court.
“I’m feeling a lot better excited to get back to practice today, and feeling really, really positive about getting back for one of the games in the back-to-back. Obviously, difficult coming back in a back-to-back, so we’ll have to be cautious of that” Clark said.
After the Aces game, the Indiana Fever face their first back-to-back stretch of the season, taking on the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday followed by the Phoenix Mercury. Because both matchups are on the road, the team is being cautious about rushing her back.
She is averaging 21.2 points, 8.2 assists and 4.0 rebounds in 17 games this season.
