Caitlin Clark recorded a career night against Flau’jae Johnson’s Seattle Storm on Friday. She scored 45 points and dished 10 assists, becoming the first WNBA player to record such a double-double. While Clark’s efforts dominated the headlines, an incident with Johnson also picked up steam after the game.
During the fourth quarter, Clark fouled Johnson when the Storm were up four. The Storm rookie hit the floor, and the referees penalized Clark for it. The Indiana Fever star tried to help Johnson up, but the Seattle guard ignored Clark in frustration.
The duo seems to be friends off the court. Before tipoff, they embraced each other. Johnson also name-dropped Clark in one of her songs. Given this dynamic, the fourth-quarter incident left fans buzzing online.
X user Kyle Ingram clipped the moment:
One fan said Johnson may have been “mad” about Clark’s explosive game:
“I’d be mad too if someone put 45 on me “
More reactions followed:
Clark and the Fever overturned the four-point deficit after that incident and won 110-107. The Indiana guard made clutch plays down the stretch, including a couple of threes and multiple free throws. She also stood her ground defensively.
Caitlin Clark got a crucial block on Flau’jae Johnson
Caitlin Clark made arguably the most crucial play of the night with 55 seconds left. The game was tied 102-102 when Indiana lost the ball as Makayla Timpson tried to pass it to Clark at the top of the key. Johnson stole the pass and was one-on-one against Clark in transition.
However, the Fever star didn’t give up on that play and swiped the ball out of Johnson’s hands. The ball deflected off the Storm rookie and went out of bounds. After winning that possession, Clark converted a three-pointer on the other end, giving the Fever a three-point lead. The Fever held on the rest of the way and won by that exact margin.
It was Clark’s second block of the night. She also had four steals.
