Two seasons ago, Jalen Brunson was infamously called out by an analyst on national TV. Appearing on an ESPN program, Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon expressed serious doubt that the New York Knicks could ever win it all, given that their star player Brunson is “too small.”
On Monday, Brunson went a long way in his silencing his critics by leading the Knicks to their first-ever Finals appearance in 17 years. After the Knicks completed their sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers, fans took the opportunity to recall Hammon’s words.
“I bet she feeling real stupid right now.”
“He’s now leading his team to the finals”
“Becky Hammon needs to issue an apology to Jalen Brunson”
“What Becky Hammon said about Jalen Brunson is why the Cavs lost to the Knicks.”
Interestingly, there were other netizens who argued that Becky Hammon’s point still stands, given that Brunson and his Knicks squad have to win one more series before laying claim to the NBA championship.
“we’ll see if he hosting that Larry until then she still right”
“Need to win 4 more games”
To Jalen Brunson’s credit, he has responded strongly to the naysayers by leading the Knicks to four consecutive playoff trips. After falling short in the Eastern Conference Finals last year, New York is now bound for the championship series, where they will face either the San Antonio Spurs or the defending champions OKC Thunder.
Brunson, who was unanimously named Eastern Conference Finals MVP, will have over a week to rest and study his opponents for the biggest series of his career. If the Knicks do emerge victorious on the biggest stage, Hammon herself might have something new to say at that point.
Becky Hammon Goes Viral With Response to Mid-Game Interview: “Because They’re Good at Basketball”
Becky Hammon certainly has a way with words, and this past weekend, she’d gone viral again with a rather concise response.
At one point during the Las Vegas Aces-LA Sparks clash on Saturday, Hammon was asked by CBS Sports’ Tiffany Blackmon to explain why the Aces bench has been “so effective.” The multi-titled coach went on to give the simplest answer that she could muster.
“Because they’re good at basketball.”
Though the Aces went on to lose that game, the defending WNBA champions are still in good shape, winning four of their first six outings. In all likelihood, Hammon’s focus is on her squad and not the Brunson comments she made back in 2023.
