On Saturday, Azzi Fudd made history by becoming the first-ever rookie to win the WNBA 3-Point Contest. This feat alone was worthy of a headline, but Fudd has generated plenty of buzz with a quote she said after the event.
Fresh off defeating the Portland Fire’s Bridget Carleton in the final round of the 3-Point Contest, Fudd issued a challenge to the NBA’s all-time leading 3-point shooter Steph Curry.
“Steph, if you’re listening, I’ve been asking for a rematch since high school. So, maybe this is the time to figure out a plan in place.”
This call-out is anything but random, as Curry has been a mentor figure to Fudd for quite some time now. Back in 2018, she was one of only two women invited to Curry’s SC30 Select Camp.
After defeating male and female hoopers alike in the camp’s 3-point shootout, Fudd had the opportunity to take on Curry himself. In the duel that ensued, the Golden State Warriors star outgunned Fudd 20-16.
On Friday, though, the Dallas Wings rookie was second to no one. After besting the likes of Rhyne Howard, Natisha Hiedeman, Marina Mabrey, and Janelle Salaün in the first round, Fudd advanced to a final showdown against Carleton. In the end, Carleton mustered just 19 points while Fudd went off for a scintillating 30-piece to claim the crown.

Though Azzi Fudd reigned supreme in the 3-Point Contest, she found herself at the mercy of her veterans on Friday.
After hoisting the trophy and receiving the $40,000 prize, Fudd was drenched by her Wings teammates Jessica Shepard and Alysha Clark, leading her to exclaim a playful protest.
“My hair!”
Fudd, Shepard, and Clark all have plenty to look forward to after the All-Star break, as the Wings (18-9) stand at no. 4 in the standings.
