Former WNBA player-turned-analyst Angel McCoughtry shared her thoughts on Caitlin Clark’s issues with her game and how she can get past her emotional phase. The Iowa native has garnered criticism this season for her constant verbal scuffles with game officials. That has even led some analysts to come out and question her behavior on the court.
On The Athletic’s No Offseason podcast, along with other WNBA analysts, McCoughtry talked about how Clark’s offensive game has taken a turn, coupled with her emotional outbursts. She was seen in a heated exchange with her head coach, Stephanie White, in the last game against the Portland Fire.
Referring to that, the analyst said:
“I don’t know if it’s gonna be Caitlin doing it for Caitlin. I think an external event has to happen, like Raven Johnson starts… I am just giving you an example of like a canon-type event that would need to occur for Caitlin to be like, ‘Oh, I am not the birthday, as the kids would say these days, I am not the main event. I am a member of a team.”
However, fans have not taken the analysts’ take lightly, as many called them out for hating on Caitlin Clark. One fan wrote:
“This is some of the dumbest takes put together. . Caitlin Clark haters need to be studied in a lab like rats.”
Another fan mocked the analysts for their take and wrote:
“@AnnieCostabile this hot take must’ve been because rent was due…”
Clark is surely going through a rough patch lately, as her offensive production has taken a big fall. Moreover, the talks around her relationship with Steph have not helped either. However, can it become big enough to force her out of the starting lineup?
Can Raven Johnson replace Caitlin Clark in starting lineup?
The Indiana Fever lost 84-100 to the Portland Fire, an expansion team still trying to figure out its chemistry. While that has disappointed fans, Caitlin Clark’s six points and six assists in 22 minutes have seemingly hurt them more. However, as Angel McCoughtry’s co-host Sabreena pointed out, it would be difficult for the team to make such a decision, and the only way it might happen would be by replacing Lexie Hull and not Clark.
Clark has consistently proven her value on the court, and one bad game doesn’t even put a dent in her class. Even though Raven Johnson played a stellar game against the Golden State Valkyries, scoring 16 points off the bench in 21 minutes, her ball-handling has not been at a level that she can facilitate the starting squad.
Moreover, Clark’s unlimited range and shooting abilities are just one side of her offensive prowess. After the video of her exchange with Steph went viral, Caitlin Clark has also opened up about the bond the two share, sidelining fans’ speculation. It seems highly unlikely that Clark would lose her spot in the squad.
