A’ja Wilson spoke about her relationship with WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert during All-Star Weekend.
Wilson was asked about Engelbert amid growing criticism surrounding the league and the commissioner’s leadership.
“My only relationship with Cathy is when she hands me awards, which is great. I love to see her in that light,” Wilson said.
“But I think when it comes to leadership, I’m always big on bonds. I’m always big on connection on a deeper level. And I think that’s what we all try to look for when it comes to a leader, when we’re on our teams, when we’re coming to the business table. It’s a partnership, and it should go hand in hand.”
Wilson’s comments come as Engelbert continues to face scrutiny over player safety issues, officiating, and the league’s response to online harassment towards the players. Last season, Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier openly criticized Engelbert’s leadership, and Wilson publicly backed her teammate’s concerns.
Despite the criticism, Engelbert has repeatedly defended her leadership, pointing to the league’s rapid growth and expansion as she remains committed to executing the WNBA’s long-term vision.
A’ja Wilson Apologizes to Angel Reese
Wilson instinctively blocked an Angel Reese layup during the exhibition, despite initially trying to avoid the shot. Reese stumbled and fell after the play, and both stars laughed it off on the court later.
Wilson admitted afterward that the block was completely unintentional.
“Angel was not supposed to do that,” Wilson said. “I was trying to get out of the way. I do not like to block shots during All-Star games. I’ve never had that happen to me, and I’m so sorry.”
Reese, who recently returned after dealing with a leg injury, took the moment lightly as the two shared a laugh. Wilson finished the exhibition with 12 points, while Reese contributed five rebounds and four assists in limited minutes.
The All-Star Game was filled with good moments, and Wilson’s candid remarks about the commissioner and the funny incident with Reese were the highlights of the day.
