This past week, Sophie Cunningham got netizens buzzing with her comments on transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports. It wasn’t long before her podcast co-host said some noteworthy opinions of his own.
As a matter of fact, West Wilson expressed a view that was contrary to the Indiana Fever guard’s take.
“Transgender athletes in American sports is such a borderline non-existent issue. Right wingers have convinced the massive portion of people in our country that [transgender athletes] are a threat to sports in American, when mathematically, it’s not the case at all.”
Wilson, a childhood friend of Cunningham’s, went on to blast the “politicians, athletes, and journalists” who have framed transgender athletes in an antagonistic manner.
“You’re only isolating transgender people even more by making them seem like this giant group of people is a threat to society, a threat to sports, when that’s just not proportionately the truth. There are, like, 10 transgender athletes in all of the NCAA. So I think there are unique questions that can be handled on an individual basis.”
These comments from Wilson stand in contrast to Cunningham’s remarks in an ESPN profile published this past week.
In the ESPN piece by Hallie Grossman, Cunningham relayed how important it was for her to help uphold the rights of female athletes.
“I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
It will be interesting to see how this difference in opinion will play out on the next episode of Cunningham and West’s “Show Me Something” podcast. The two buddies and co-hosts have shown in the past that they have no qualms with saying exactly what’s on their mind.

Buoyed by viral moments like her finger-pointing meme and her UFC 329 ring girl stint, Cunningham is fast becoming one of the most popular athletes in the WNBA.
