The Indiana Fever have revoked the credentials of Scott Agnes, a freelance reporter and team insider. This comes after the WNBA franchise took issue with the way Agnes reported the news concerning Caitlin Clark’s most recent injury.

On May 20th, the WNBA star was ruled out of that day’s game, and the reporter published that this was part of the team’s strategic load management plan for Clark. The team took issue with the phrasing and expressed that “inaccurate and unsubstantiated information” was used, as they decided to revoke all of Agnes’ credentials for team events.

The journalist’s reaction to the team’s decision didn’t wait, with him telling The Sporting News:

“Journalists should not be the story. Our role is to cover it. In this case, however, I felt you deserved transparency about what happened and why. I do not take this decision lightly and I’m disappointed by it, particularly because the reporting at issue was sourced, contextualized and updated as additional information became available. This is my livelihood. I remain committed to covering the Fever, the Pacers and professional basketball in Indiana with the same standards I always have,”

The exact phrasing that Scott Agnes used was that Caitlin Clark was being taken off the team as “part of a strategic management plan for the season.” Ostensibly, this was due to the team having had four games in just eight days.

According to some reports, the team did approach him shortly before the game to challenge his characterization. Scott Agnes has been covering the Indiana Fever for a decade.

Caitlin Clark on her discussion with Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White

This isn’t the only controversy surrounding Caitlin Clark and the Fever, with reporters poking on Monday concerning the player’s sideline discussion with coach Stephanie White during Indiana’s 100-84 loss to Portland on Saturday.

Clark insisted to reporters that nothing had happened:

“A lot of those things happen all the time, and I know there’s a camera on me, and that’s how it’s going to be,” Clark said. “But there’s a lot of people out there in the media or on TV that they think they know a lot of things and they’re just blatantly wrong about a lot of things.”

White had similar words for the press:

“I think what happened in that moment is I was challenging a player. It’s coaching, it’s what it is. And I don’t often think it becomes an issue if you’re watching it in men’s sports most of the time.”

Caitlin Clark went as far as to blame the press for creating problems that didn’t exist, focusing on the minutiae of the game instead of the essentials.
