Urban Meyer Set to Take Brian Hartline’s Help in Off-Field Makeover as Coaching Duo Reunites

Former Ohio State Buckeyes coaching duo Urban Meyer and Brian Hartline have a shared history with Ohio State. Hartline proudly wears a full sleeve of tattoos on his left arm. The duo discussed the same during their appearance on The Triple Option podcast.

Meyer revealed that, like Hartline, he was thinking about getting his right arm inked with a full sleeve of tattoos. However, he voided the idea because it was too expensive.

“You know, I was going to get a sleeve on my arm. I wanted to, it was just, it was going to cost a little bit too much, so I decided to stay away from it,” Meyer said.

If money was going to be an issue, then Meyer’s former assistant has it covered. Hartline mentioned that he knows just the guy for the job.

“I know a guy, coach,” Hartline said. “Yeah, I got a guy. I can see you driving that boat, you know, with a great sleeve.”

Hartline originally joined Ohio State under Meyer in 2017. He rose through the ranks, from WR coach to offensive coordinator and finally head coach. Meyer has consistently backed him as a future star coach. Hartline is currently the head coach of the South Florida Bulls.

Brian Hartline Reveals Turning Down Urban Meyer For Ohio State Job

Brian Hartline was the Buckeyes’ standout wide receiver and even played seven NFL seasons. After his NFL career, Hartline joined the program as a quality control assistant in 2017. Meyer promoted him to the role of wide receivers coach a year later.

During this week’s The Triple Option Podcast, Hartline revealed that he initially turned down Meyer’s offer late in the 2016 season when the team was preparing for the bowl game.

“That just shows how silly I was then,” Hartline said. “I was just getting done playing coach. Remember, there was a fad where guys would come back and practice with you, getting ready for the bowl game. And my brother talked to me about coming back to practice. And then there’s Terry McLaurin, and then there’s Parris Campbell and Austin Mack. And I was coaching them up as second-year players. I want to say my heart wasn’t there yet. I was like, hell no. I knew the obligation of being a coach, and I was still working through that. So I turned it down.

“I never got in contact. It got closer in February for spring ball. I remember looking at you as a coach, I was like, ‘if I’m going to do it, I want them to trust me. I’m going to be there every freaking day. So I’m going to be there for spring. Let’s see how it goes.” I was hooked. And so when we’re telling you, ‘Coach, I’m in for the year, let’s do this.’ You know, you went all about being super busy. I went back to the super room, (and) that changed my life.”

Hartline remained with the Buckeyes till the 2025 season and got the job of head coach with University of South Florida for the 2026 season.
