Curt Cignetti’s career has been on the up for the last few years and reached its highest point as he led the Indiana Hoosiers to the national championship trophy last season, but there was a time when all of this looked a far-fetched dream. Cignetti had a cushy job as a part of Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama, and perhaps many other coaches might have been happy in the position, but not Cignetti.
Talking about how his life and career changed, Cignetti has gone into detail about the decisions he made that decided he ends up as a natty-winning head coach during his lifetime.
“I just had to be a head coach,” Cignetti told Adam Breneman.
“I didn’t wanna finish up as a career assistant. It was an unprecedented move…and it was a lifestyle change at the time too. I was enjoying life in Indiana PA. We won a lot of games and near the end I felt like I had a couple national championship teams ready to go and then Elon called.
“Nobody thought you could win there and their track record was worse than Indiana, and we rattle off eight in a row and beat JMU the next year up at JMU. And then I took the JMU job. That job was a winner, but we improved them by six games in year one.”
How Did Curt Cignetti End Up at the Indiana Hoosiers?
In the same interview, Cignetti went into the reasons behind how the Indiana head coaching job came around, and how he was ready to win at his new team.
“I loved that place and had no intention of leaving and Indiana called, it was a quick process. I think by the time I came here I just had a lot of confidence and belief because we’d won a lot of Championships.”
