Tyler Shough Transfer Landing Spots

James Madison

The James Madison Dukes, despite their loss this weekend, have been one of the best stories in college football this year. Arizona transfer Jordan McCloud took his game to another level with James Madison, but he’s done after this year.

After what we’ve seen from McCloud and former Dukes quarterback Todd Centeio, Shough figures to be the next quarterback to end his collegiate playing time with a career season. As long as he can stay healthy, he’d be a great fit for this offense.

Arizona State

Tyler Shough could very well head back home to finish his career. The Chandler native received plenty of attention from West Coast schools during his recruiting, and there would be some interest once again now that he’s in the transfer portal.

The Arizona State Sun Devils resorted to using both running back Cameron Skattebo and tight end Jaylin Conyers at quarterback this year, with mixed results. Injuries continue to hamper the offense at the position, and Shough at worst gives them another body. His game could help elevate the offense too.

Georgia Southern

One way to help ensure Shough stays healthy is by putting him in a system that makes him get rid of the ball quicker. Georgia Southern loves operating at a blistering pace, and the Eagles could benefit Shough’s health. Injuries have limited his entire career, so it wouldn’t be wise for his future team to have him hold on to the ball for too long.

San Jose State

Chevan Cordeiro’s playing days are coming to an end, and the San Jose State Spartans will need someone to run their offense in 2024. If Shough really wants to play, the Group of Five route has to be what he chooses. There won’t be many Power Five schools that will take him and guarantee a starting role.

It’s not a bad thing to go this route, though. If Shough wants a future in football, he needs reps, and he needs to do it for a full season. The Mountain West is still a quality conference, and he has a similar skillset to Cordeiro’s. That makes this match perfect for both parties.

UTSA

Frank Harris, sadly, will not be playing football with the UTSA program next year. Which means this is a great landing spot for Shough. A big question is if Jeff Traylor will still be around, but UTSA is still a quality option for a guy looking for one final chance.

Shough is a solid dual-threat passer who can benefit from the talent the Roadrunners have to offer. Someone has to take Harris’ job, and you can bet the coaching staff is looking for a potential transfer to come in and compete right away.
