Ty Simpson Injury Update: Insider Reveals Former Alabama QB’s Status Ahead Of NFL Draft Combine

Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson has entered the 2026 NFL draft and could be picked in the first round. The quarterback will be looking ahead to the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, where there will be eyes of several scouts on him, especially since presumptive first overall pick Fernando Mendoza will wait to show his skills until Pro Day.

There are concerns regarding his participation in the Combine following his rib injury during the 2026 College Football Playoff Rose Bowl game against Indiana.

Tom Pelissero Confirms Ty Simpson’s Participation in NFL Combine

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, Ty Simpson will be participating in the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis later this month. Pelissero notes that the quarterback will use this opportunity to raise his draft stock in the absence of Fernando Mendoza.

“We will see the consensus QB, Ty Simpson out of Alabama, who has a real opportunity to solidify his status this week as a first-round draft pick,” Pelissero said.

Pelissero dissected Simpson’s season with Alabama and the fact that he has only played one full season as the starter. He also mentioned about the severe weight loss endured by the quarterback coming to the Rose Bowl game.

“Now, for Simpson, the knocks on him are that he was only a one-year starter,” Pelissero said. “The numbers tailed off later in the season. He doesn’t necessarily have the biggest frame, but consider some of the ancillary factors, even setting aside the protection issues that Alabama had and some of the drops by the wide receivers.

“He also was dealing with a severe case of gastritis toward the tail end of the season and was weighing in the 190s by the time they got to the Rose Bowl. I’m told he’s now back up to 215. He is going to look the part.”

Pelissero then talked about which teams would be interested in drafting Simpson in the first round.

“Remember, there are a couple of teams with multiple first-round draft picks. The Jets are one,” Pelissero added. “The Rams, even with Matthew Stafford, are another. But in the long-term plan, those are a couple of the teams that potentially could be of interest, not just in the first round, but in the top half of the first round.”

Simpson took Alabama into the College Football Playoffs. He led Alabama to an 11-4 overall record and a berth in the CFP quarterfinals before their loss to Indiana. The quarterback passed for 3,567 yards with 28 touchdowns and only five interceptions.
