Transfer Portal QB Shakeup: Day 2 Brings Big Names In, Blue Bloods on Edge

The 2025 spring transfer portal has triggered a wave of quarterback changes, shaking the foundation of elite college football programs. Now in its second day, the portal, open through April 25, continues to see notable signal-callers enter, creating instability for some top-tier teams.

As of April 17, more than 2,700 players have opted to transfer this offseason. This spring window is the final opportunity for underclassmen to change schools ahead of the 2025 season, giving programs one last shot to address needs under center or reinforce depth in response to roster gaps left by key quarterback departures.

Top QBs Hit the Transfer Portal on Day 2

The 2025 spring transfer portal is experiencing significant quarterback movement, creating uncertainty among top programs. Among the most notable names entering the portal:

    Nico Iamaleava

Once Tennessee’s starting quarterback, Iamaleava’s departure marks a headline move in the spring window. A four-star recruit who threw 19 touchdown passes in 2024, Iamaleava’s exit follows a public breakdown over NIL contract negotiations.

At 6’6″ and 215 pounds, his potential is undeniable, but his transfer market is complicated by timing, salary demands and the fact that many teams have already filled their quarterback slots for 2025.

    Jaden Rashada

Known for his strong arm and playmaking ability, Rashada is expected to be a key name in the portal, adding depth to the quarterback talent pool that many programs will pursue aggressively.

Rashada reportedly entered the portal well before the spring window, but it was announced that he would ‘wait until spring’ to transfer back in January of 2025.

    Gio Lopez

South Alabama’s Lopez has caught the eye of programs like North Carolina, which are actively seeking to upgrade their quarterback situation.

Top Programs Scramble After Portal Moves

The quarterback shakeup has left several established programs in search of stability.

Tennessee is at the heart of the turmoil following Nico Iamaleava’s exit.

With only two scholarship quarterbacks remaining—freshman George McIntyre and redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger—the Volunteers are facing a critical need for reinforcements. The drama surrounding Iamaleava’s NIL disputes has created an unstable situation that could spark more roster changes.

North Carolina is reportedly uncertain at quarterback, as Max Johnson recovers from a serious leg injury and other options remain unproven. The Tar Heels are expected to target Gio Lopez to address their concerns.

USC, despite speculation linking Iamaleava to the program, seems unlikely to pursue him. With Jayden Maiava slated to start, the Trojans are hesitant to make a midseason quarterback change.
